This summer, the Toggenburg district of Switzerland will be the prime focus of attention of sport balloonists from throughout the world. Not only will the world’s top gas balloon pilots be present in Ebnat-Kappel on Saturday 1 September to start in the Gordon Bennett Cup, but a memorial exhibition to Eduard Spelterini will allow a glimpse back in time to the story of aviation at the end of the 19^th century. Eduard Spelterini was born 160 years ago in the nearby town of Bazenheid, and is recognised as one of the greatest pioneers of ballooning and of aerial photography.

For balloonists everywhere, the Gordon Bennett-Cup counts as the most prestigious ballooning event in the world. On 1 September the top gas balloon pilots of the world will once again compete in this historic race and take off from Toggenburg and ride the winds in their bids to fly as far as possible. With a total of 22 teams from 11 countries, the number of pilots that have stepped up to the challenge is well above the average.

Organizers sign contract with the FAI

Preparations for the Gordon Bennett 2012 are already well advanced. Another important step was taken at the beginning of December when the organisational contract with the FAI was signed.

From 31st August to 8th September 2012 the linked small Toggenburg towns of Ebnat and Kappel will host the Gordon Bennett Cup 2012 and become the centre of focus of the International Gas Balloon sporting community. Preparations for this internationally-renowned event are already under way, and the event has confirmed its main sponsor, the St. Galler Kantonalbank (the Bank of the Canton (Swiss state) of St Gallen).
