A balloon basket from the time of Spelterini at the Gordon Bennett Cup 2012

This summer, the Toggenburg district of Switzerland will be the prime focus of attention of sport balloonists from throughout the world. Not only will the world’s top gas balloon pilots be present in Ebnat-Kappel on Saturday 1 September to start in the Gordon Bennett Cup, but a memorial exhibition to Eduard Spelterini will allow a glimpse back in time to the story of aviation at the end of the 19th century. Eduard Spelterini was born 160 years ago in the nearby town of Bazenheid, and is recognised as one of the greatest pioneers of ballooning and of aerial photography.

Gordon Bennett 2012 – 22 teams from 11 countries

For balloonists everywhere, the Gordon Bennett-Cup counts as the most prestigious ballooning event in the world. On 1 September the top gas balloon pilots of the world will once again compete in this historic race and take off from Toggenburg and ride the winds in their bids to fly as far as possible. With a total of 22 teams from 11 countries, the number of pilots that have stepped up to the challenge is well above the average.
